Double Exposure
Description: This is a masking technique. There are three elements to the technique,
The first element is the background, in the example one of them is a city that is lit up at night. The second element is the mask that is cutting over the top of the background. The third element is using the mask like an adjustment layer or matte to do something to the background, but in some cases it is overlaying more footage over the top to give two different focuses (hence the double exposure). In the example we have a bit of kingpin's eye revealing. This tends to get more commonly used in posters or photography, but it can also be used for title sequences.
Use: This technique is used to show two conflicting subjects at once. It is quite an easy way of putting lots of topics or points about a film together.
